My name is Aaron Allen. I am currently employed as an Outreach Worker for
the Australian Community Support Organisation, assisting individuals with
disabilities improve their independent living skills. Previous to my
current position, I was a member of a team of therapists conducting ABA therapy
with a young autistic child. I have thus witnessed first-hand how families adapt
to and cope with a child with a disability. I believe that it is my deep
interest and experience in the disability field that has led me to conduct
the following research project.
As part of my fourth year Postgraduate Diploma of Psychology at Swinburne
University, I am conducting research into parents who are caring for their
children with disabilities. The purpose of this study is to gain better
insight into the lives of parents who have to cope with the added demands
of raising a child with a disability.
It is my intention that the information gained from this research will help
families who are trying to cope with the added difficulties that a child
with a disability gives rise to. This information will also help
professional counsellors working with parents who are experiencing problems
in these areas.
I have received full approval from the SBS Research Ethics Committee at
Swinburne University to conduct this research. The topics covered in the
questionnaire include state of well being, social support, perceived
fairness of division of household labour and spirituality. The
questionnaire will take approximately 1 hour to complete.
I am writing to request your permission to distribute questionnaires to
parents who may be interested in completing the questionnaire. Perhaps in
place of, or in addition to this, would you be able to advertise this
project on your website?
